    Occupational Therapy: supporting life roles

As a holistic occupational therapist, I have a foothold in the medical field but that is not where I usually start. As much as I listen to your concerns with any known illness process located in the body I am also listening to your lived experience about the consequences of that illness, life event, or chronic condition. How does your situation impact your valued roles as a family member, worker, pet owner, friend, neighbor or nature enthusiast? How does your main concerns affect others? The world around you? We collaborate on your priorities for intervention and then create a plan to restore, increase, or maintain your capacity to engage and participate in those daily life activities in the context of a meaningful physical, social, spiritual, or other valued you-name-it environment.

    Assessments may include :

    • Functional mobility and posture screens
    • Environmental modifications
    • Sensory integration
    • Activity analysis of functional tasks

Yoga Therapy: ancient practices for health

Yoga therapists are typically a yoga teacher or licensed professional with 800 hours of training that include seven three-month mentorships on topics such as addiction, grief, depression, anxiety, neurological disorders, cancer, functional movement, Ayurvedic sciences, and chronic pain. As a client, there is no expectation to be bendy, own a yoga mat, know how to meditate, be spiritual or know how to chant. You can be all of these things, some of these things or nothing at all like these things. Our collaboration involves only having the desire and curiosity to explore practices that are nature-inspired, time-honored, evidenced-based or just outside-the-box from what you are doing now.

    Interventions may include:

    • Breathing exercises
    • Self-myofascial release techniques
    • Physical postures and sequences
    • Meditation and mindfulness exercises
    • Yoga philosophy discussion
    • Mudras/Mantras/Ancient chants
    • Yoga Nidra and guided imagery recordings
    • Homework

    Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy: Hands-On therapy

As a Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapist (BCST), I engage in a light hands-on touch for the whole body. Clients lie on a massage table fully clothed with all the props, pillows, and blankets needed to create a safe and therapeutic oasis of calm. The session focus is to quiet the whole body but mainly the nervous system (NS) as the NS is a highway of energetic messages constantly sending and receiving information. For many people there is a lot of traffic in their NS highway that makes daily living chaotic. BCST practitioners are trained to use acute perception skills to perceive subtle physiological changes. However, it is not the goal to directly manipulate or change these chaotic patterns but seek areas that exhibit health and resilience. By directing our awareness to the body's available health versus the body's imbalances then we can amplify the process of bringing bodily systems back toward balance. The result of this strength-based approach invites ease and potentially a decrease in symptoms. Improvement after the session may be subtle or dramatic.

    Who can benefit:

    • Injuries including those to bones and tissues
    • Anxiety and depression
    • Chronic pain
    • PTSD
    • Loss/grief
    • Feelings of compression or pressure
    • Body image issues

    How It All Started

I started learning about somatic interventions (body centered therapies for healing trauma) because of my beautiful mastiff, Magnolia, that I rescued (tall dog in photo). Magnolia was the most gentle soul, unless you were a stranger, then that's when all her trauma from previous abuse came rearing up. I learned from many amazing animal behavioral therapists how to rehabilitate her and after many, many years of soul work together she became the most kid-friendly, bunny-friendly, stranger-friendly dog you could ever meet. I learned so much about the nervous system through Magnolia's healing that I decided to use that knowledge to seek further training to address trauma impacting us two-legged folks. Because of Magnolia, dogs that have been my companions and dogs that I have trained at shelters, I am where I am today- Dandelion Holistic OT.

    Other Factoids About Me

    • When I was in high school I did the goat milking demonstrations at Lincoln Park's Farm in the Zoo
    • Homemade desserts are my kryptonite
    • I once rode a Carabao (water buffalo)

WHAT IS SOMATICS?: A BOTTOM UP PROCESS FOR MENTAL WELLNESS

    BOTTOM UP PROCESS: FEELING

Activates healing through yoga or energy work that release bodily tension and bodily restrictions.  By FEELING the impact of the thought or emotion somatic interventions help clients cope with their raw emotions and defense mechanisms

    VIA THE BODY.

Change the nervous system first to change the unproductive thoughts.

    TOP DOWN PROCESS: THINKING

Activates healing through talk therapy to reframe the unproductive thoughts and activated emotions. By THINKING differently the impact of the improved cognitive message can potentially change the nervous system to sense safety

    VIA THE MIND.

Change the unproductive thoughts first to change the nervous system.

“All emotions, even those that are suppressed and unexpressed, have physical effects. Unexpressed emotions tend to stay in the body like small ticking time bombs- they are illness in incubation.”

    Marilyn Van M. Derber

    Why Dandelion?

    MINDSET

Dandelions are Nature’s unsung heroes among the world of flowers. In spring, dandelions are the first to pop up to nourish the bumblebees when they emerge from hibernation. Some consider dandelions to be weeds but others consider them to be the stuff that children close their eyes, make a wish, and blow on that puff ball to allow their wishes to take flight. We can look at a field of dandelions and see a hundred weeds or a thousand wishes. Our perspective can shape how we view the world and create a mindset that sees obstacles or opportunity.

And the dandelion does not stop growing, because it is told it is a weed. The dandelion does not care what others see. It says, “One day, they’ll be making wishes upon me.”

    B. Atkinson

    SUN

    STARS

    MOON

TRANSCEND, to rise above, to go beyond. The sun climbs the sky to illuminate everything below. At this height, we have a vantage point that sees the bigger picture of how the obstacles and challenges; the assets and supports; the physical and social environment, interplay with each other to impact our life story.

    MOON

    STARS

    MOON

TRANSFORM, to change in nature, disposition, heart or character. The moon is a symbol of intuition, hidden influences, and emotions. By learning how we create defenses against traumatic events, we can also learn how to transform these obstacles into insight to begin healing.

    STARS

    STARS

    STARS

TRANSFUSE, to cause to be permeated or imbibed. The stars symbolize our renewed sense of self. Through the process of transforming old unproductive patterns, we can begin to imbibe ourselves with loving kindness and compassion that is not  "in spite" of our imperfections and adversities but because of them .
